Biblical Preaching (Micro-credential) - Audit Option

Description

Are you interested in preaching, but never had any formal training? Are you a seasoned preacher, and you’re wanting to develop emerging preachers in your church? Or do you simply want to sharpen up your own preaching skills? If your answer is yes, then this practical, and interactive training workshop is for you. It will provide a basic introduction to the principles and practices of preaching sermons that are both faithful to Scripture and engaging for listeners. Topics covered will include:

  • The importance of biblical preaching
  • The essential ingredients of effective Christian preaching
  • The character, spirituality and ethics of the preacher
  • The practice of observing and exegeting a biblical text
  • The art of illustration
  • The discipline of application
  • The principles for shaping a sermon journey
  • The skills of effective oral communication

The 1-day in-person block course is being offered on the following alternative dates and locations in 2026: 

  • Wellington: Saturday 1st August - North Porirua Baptist Church (enrolment opens 6th July and closes 24th July) with Dr John Tucker
  • Dunedin: Saturday 15th August (enrolment opens 6th July and closes 24th July) with Dr John Tucker and Dr Paul Jones

Time: 9:30-4pm. Morning tea provided, BYO lunch.

Audit Option: $107 inclusive of GST (attend the 1-day workshop). Register for your preferred date below.

Presenters

Dr John Tucker is a lecturer in Church History and Homiletics at Carey Baptist College. He’s passionate about the power of God’s word and the need to proclaim it effectively. Before teaching at Carey, John was a pastor and a lawyer. He loves sport and loves talking about that too.

Dr Paul Jones is the Principal of Carey Baptist College. Prior to working in academic leadership, he taught Old Testament and Preaching, and has been blessed with opportunities to study in some life-changing environments like Regent College (Canada) and Durham University (UK).

Paul has a PhD in Interpreting Old Testament Narrative from Durham University (UK). He has also the author of 3 books to help the church better understand the Old Testament.
